Bio: May’s childhood was filled with roller skating adventures including the four corners game, the Hokey Pokey and the Jitterbug. Figure and dance lessons seemed to drag on for hours, but May had a goal: The Olympics. Sure, there was no roller skating in the Olympics, but May saw that as a mere oversight, which would undoubtedly be righted by the time she reached Olympic athlete age. Downtime at the rink was spent in the skate repair area where May developed a liking for tools and men who knew how to use them. These men practiced a Neanderthal sport on skates that little May had never seen. It involved protective gear, grunting and a lot of words she didn’t understand. This looked a lot better than figure 8’s and waltzes! Alas, before May could realize her new goal of being the first woman roller hockey player, the rink was torn down, paved over and replaced with a strip mall. (Fast forward many years spent discovering motorcycles and tattoos.) Along comes a sport that struck a nostalgic chord in May. It’s not the Olympics, Figure, Dance or Hockey. It’s much better than all those combined: May found Roller Derby!
