Community Outreach

Giving Blood on and Off the Track

NHRD strives to give back to the community. That should come as no surprise — we're a passionate group of women who believe we have the power to make an impact. Our league and our individual skaters support a variety of charities. Here are some we've worked with in the past.

  • American Red Cross
Our rollergirls give blood on AND off the track. New Hampshire Roller Derby organized an annual event in 2009 at the Manchester Red Cross to donate blood and to create awareness within the community for the need for blood donations. In 2010, NHRD sponsored 3 blood drives, and 4 more iwere held in 2011.

  • Girls, Inc.
Their mission say they're dedicated to inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold. Sounds a lot like derby. We like that. In 2009 the Nashua center was vandalized. We don't like that at all. Derby girls donated art and craft supplies to replace some of the damaged items. In 2011, we donated 40 tickets so girls from the Manchester program could enjoy a fun-filled night of derby!

  • Alyssa Alves Fund
30 year old waitress Alisa Alves suffered a major brain aneurysm and did not have insurance. The Alisa Alves Fund was established to offset medical expenses and get her the physical therapy she needs to get well. NHRD donated a portion of 2011 season opener ticket sales to the fund.

  • NH Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (NHFAPA)
NHRD Raised money to donate more than 60 tickets so that NHFAPA member families could enjoy a night of derby action on the house!

  • Alzheimer's Association

Charities We Have Helped in the Past

  • Boston Area Rape Crisis Center
The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center was founded in 1973 by a group of women dedicated to building a hotline to answer calls from rape survivors. Today, BARCC is a national leader in providing comprehensive, free services including a 24-hour hotline, 24-hour medical advocacy, individual and group counseling, and legal advocacy. BARCC also provides community awareness and prevention services through partnerships and training with organizations and communities. To show their support, New Hampshire Roller Derby raised money and walked in BARCC's annual event "The Walk for Change" in April of 2009.

  • Helping Giovanni Guglielmo
Giovanni Guglielmo needed a bone marrow transplant. His family started working to save him. Giovanni's had his transplant, but his family and friends are still committed to educating people about bone marrow donation-and saving other kids in the process.

  • NH Food Bank. The New Hampshire Food Bank serves as the only Food Bank in the state of New Hampshire. At our last home bout of 2009, NHRD collected 154 pounds of food and $27 in donations for the NH Food Bank in Manchester, NH.

  • Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund
Fighting breast cancer is serious business. Empress Explosiva, Bad Ass Mama and PutUNya Grave helped raise funds for a team participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day Walk.

  • Animal Rescue League of NH (ARL of NH). We may be passionate about roller derby, but the members of NH Roller Derby are even more passionate about animals. In 2010, we have formed a new partnership with the ARL of NH to help promote awareness for their organization and help raise funds. They will also be present at our May 22nd bout, so please stop by and visit their table. More information will be coming soon about this exciting new relationship.
